Teacher Course Material
This section features the teacher resourses available for the 8th mathematics grade student courses. Every Student course has a Teachers Guide which includes tools and resources that support the teacher in implementing the course.
The printed and online resources produced by NKH through STEMD² are fully aligned with the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice and Content and the Smarter Balanced Assessments for mathematics. Based on the GO Math! curriculum structure, the NKH STEMD² book series and social learning platform is flexible for teachers to implement partially or fully in their classrooms, as a tool to encourage students’ interest and achievement in STEM subjects.
• Let’s Build a Canoe – Student Activities and Teacher’s Guide (Common Core aligned)
• Let’s Play the Ukulele – Student Activities and Teacher’s Guide (Common Core aligned)
• Let’s Go Fishing – Student Activities and Teacher’s Guide (SBAC aligned)
• Let’s Make Da Kine – Student Mini Projects and Teacher’s Guide (Skill development)
Teachers may access additional teacher content relating to the 8th grade student courses such as unit guides, standards, implementation guidelines and online printable handouts in the Teacher Library section.
The Canoe Project
This Unit Guide helps teachers implement student activities for the canoe project. Students will use their knowledge of mathematical concepts to design a model canoe. Native Hawaiians’ processes of designing, building and navigating a canoe required a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. For example, canoes were carefully engineered to move with the power of the wind and ocean. Polynesians’ precise mathematical intuitions guided their expansion across thousands of miles of open water.
The Music Project
This Unit Guide helps teachers implement student activities for the music project. Students will discover how the mathematics they are learning this year can be used to help you understand music theory and compose music through research, collaboration and guided questions.
The Fishing Project
This Unit Guide helps teachers implement student activities for the fishing project. In this part of the book series, we have developed a series of questions that model SBAC test questions to prepare your students for the SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) testing at the end of the school year.
The Da Kine Project
This Unit Guide helps teachers implement student activities for the Da Kine project. Students will explore teamwork and collaboration to solve end-of-unit mini projects that give students the opportunity to apply gained mathematics in a contextual manner. These projects don’t introduce any new mathematics concepts; they are designed to encourage teamwork and allow students to get creative.
